It is the Ara river that starts delimiting the lands of Boltaña, where you will discover places worth visiting both in the town’s centre and in the surrounding area, both of which have become unmissable tourist attractions in the province of Huesca.
This area has been able to bring out its beauty and has reinforced its more touristic side, which is nowadays one of the main driving forces of its economy. But what are the places you can't miss in Boltaña? Depending on your tastes, there are different places of interest.
If you want to get to know its heritage in depth, the route should start with one of its emblems: the Castle of the Counts of Sobrarbe. It is one of the signs of the town’s identity and was one of the first castles in the region, of Christian origin, and is also labelled a Spanish Place of Cultural Interest. It is located in the highest part of the territory, at the foot of the Cañimás ravine.
A walk towards the castle will take you to the viewpoint, which offers one of the most beautiful views of the Ara Valley. And as a curiosity, did you know that witches used to meet in this castle to gather their covens? As you can see, it is a place of great interest in every sense of the word.
As for its religious architecture, there is a small chapel, that of Santa Lucía, in a spectacular setting, while among the larger buildings are the Collegiate Church of San Pedro and the Monastery of Carmen, which now houses a spa hotel.
Strolling through the streets and corners of Boltaña you will find a couple of characteristic bridges: the medieval bridge that spans the San Martín ravine, and the Moscarales bridge, a that combines tradition and nature.
And precisely for those who are looking for natural spaces, this municipality opens the doors of the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Nature Reserve, through which there are different hiking routes, as well as different waterfalls and mountains that create an unimaginable figure to get lost in.
If you decide to go on a hiking route, you should know that you will be accompanied by species such as eagles and even the bearded vulture, a protected species that finds its natural habitat here. And if you are travelling in summer, you can cool off in places like the natural swimming pool of La Gorga, a spectacular pool of crystal-clear waters where you can enjoy a day of leisure and relaxation.
A place of tradition, Boltaña has its own festivals throughout the year. Some of the most important are the bonfires of San Pablo, in January, Pirenostrum, in which the festival is accompanied by the sound of traditional musical instruments and which is also considered an Activity of Tourist Interest within the autonomous community of Aragon.
