One of the best preserved remains of the past of the city of Elvas is the strength of Nossa Senhora da Graça, a defensive construction located at the top of a hill a few kilometers from the urban area itself that was designed in the 18th century by the English count of Lippe, to avoid the frequent Spanish incursions. This design was once called the most impregnable in the world so far.
One of the curiosities that we find in the area is the Amaroeira aqueduct, a construction of the 16th century made by Francisco de Arruda, the same that projects the Tower of Belen in Lisbon. This civil engineering work, with five levels supported by 843 arches, extends through an 8 -kilometer route, thus making it the largest aqueduct of the Iberian Peninsula.
If we want to soak up the Portuguese culture beyond the folk or traditional, we can visit Elvas Museum of Contemporary Art, which collects the collection of the gallery owner and conservative Antonio Cachola, composed only and exclusively of works produced by artists of Portuguese origin.
