Sourroundings of Casa Mirador de los Tomillos
Azuel is a small town belonging to the Córdoba municipality of Cardeña. It is located at the point where the provinces of Jaén, Córdoba and Ciudad Real come together.
Its geographical location is privileged for those who like nature: it is in the Los Pedroches Valley, within the beautiful Sierra de Cardeña Montoro Natural Park, in the famous Sierra Morena, and its landscapes are shaped by the action of the Yeguas River, which flows between mountains of Mediterranean forest and oak trees melojos. Species of wolves, lynxes and imperial eagles coexist in this area.
The area has a network of trails and technical information about them and places to visit such as cave paintings, the old Tejar de Azuel, the Buenas Hierbas reservoir, etc.
Azuel, although small, stands out from the rest of the towns that make up Los Pedroches due to its altitude, situated at 650m above sea level, like a ravine towards the river, while the others are located, homogeneously, above 700m. Due to this particularity, the characteristic vegetation of the area, the holm oaks, are larger in this town, and its temperatures are slightly higher in the cold winter months.
Throughout the region, granitic soils predominate, but the slate becomes characteristic as the lands meet the river. The Endrinar stream stands out in the area, whose mouth occurs in a gorge.
Azuel is one of the most charming and beautiful towns in the area, and preserves in good condition remains of our country's historical past, from times as old as the Copper, Iron or Prehistory ages, through the Roman era and the Middle Ages, to the most recent. history. Its monuments include cists, villages, dolmens, mines, funerary constructions, and, more recently, from the 19th century, the Parish of San José.
Nor can we miss the opportunity to take a walk through the town, which, although it does not have large and famous historical monuments, offers the opportunity to get lost and be enchanted by its little streets.
Its geographical location is its great resource for its economy, based mainly on livestock. Every possible use is made of the mountains and the Sierras de Cardeña y Montoro Natural Park.
Azuel is, in short, a village of Cardeña, with the soul of an old inn that sheltered travelers from fatigue when they made their way from Toledo to Córdoba, and therefore had its inn and its inn. Nowadays these have disappeared, but the number of travelers who come to these lands has not decreased, both to enjoy the beautiful natural environment of the area, and to immerse themselves, through the remains that are preserved, in a piece of the history of our country.
Such is the beauty of the place that it has been the setting for films, such as "Between Wolves", part of which was filmed in Arroyo de Cabrahigo.
