Sourroundings of Bizentenea II
Zugarramurdi is a small Navarrese village of about 225 people located in the Baztán region. According to official records, in 1610 the Inquisition court in La Rioja tried 40 of Zugarramurdi's countrywomen, condemning 12 of them to be burned at the stake because they were considered witches. The covens of these witches took place in the Zugarramurdi caves, a group of caves joined by galleries caused by the erosion of the Olabidea, or hell stream.
The town is located in the heart of the Baztán Valley, a space located between the mountains of the Navarrese Pyrenees that shows an alternation of meadows, beech and holm oak forests in the mountains and ash forests on the banks of the river. Squirrels, wild boars and roe deer abound in this valley, although if you look closely you may well see some coypu, a small South American mammal with characteristics similar to those of the beaver.
In this area you can also see the Urdax caves, a spectacle of stalactites and stalagmites formed due to erosion by the Urtxume River. Numerous legends of smugglers and guerrillas circulate about the caves, giving these caves a special charm.
