Sourroundings of Bizentenea II

Zugarramurdi is a village in Navarre of about 225 people located in the Baztán region. According to official records, in 1610 the Inquisition court processed 40 women from Zugarramurdi in La Rioja, condemning 12 of them to death burned at the stake as witches. The covens of these witches took place in the caves of Zugarramurdi, a set of caves joined by galleries caused by the erosion of the Olabidea, or stream of hell.

The village is located in the valley of Baztán, a space located between the mountains of the Navarrese Pyrenees that shows an alternation of meadows, beech forests and holm oaks in the mountains and fresnedas on the banks of the river. In this valley there are many squirrels, wild boar and roe deer, although if you look closely you may see some coipo, a small South American mammal with characteristics similar to those of the beaver.

In this area you can also see the caves of Urdax, a show of stalactites and stalagmites formed by erosion by the River Urtxume. Over the caves circulate numerous legends of smugglers and guerrillas that give these caves a special charm.
