It is part of the nearby locality of Penagos, which you will encounter right in the middle of a magical, and beautiful unique place. And it is also only 20 Km away from Santander, which means that popping in for a visit, and discovering this city, are also good options if you stay in this place.
Cabárceno welcomes, during the whole year, many tourists, that come to this area to get to know and discover the quiet of its natural surroundings. For this reason, the rural tourism in this area has increased considerably during the last years, so much so, that even its population has increased significantly, and no wonder, considering the very broad accommodation offer this town has. It is for this reason, that tourism has become one of the main economic activities of this area.
There are many places to discover in this area, which have become a turning point in the history of Spain. For example, n one of the coal mines scattered about in this area, where a the beginning of the last century, and which nowadays are known as the Caldero de Cabárceno, an archaeological site with relics from the Bronze Age.
And if there is something that has lead a great increase in the number of visitors of this area, that is the Natural Park of Cabarcéno, without question, the jewel in the crown, of the nature of this area.
In it, you will even find autochthonous fauna almost in complete liberty, and some others that are close to becoming endangered species, a place that you must visit during your next trip. Here you will discover how these animals live, and many other curiosities in its surroundings, of its flora and fauna, and even witness how some of them are born in the first days.
There are many other places of interest in this area that you cannot forget to visit, but this is one of the most important ones. Not only can you walk by this natural reserve, but you can also be a VIP spectator of some of the unique and incredible views that nature has for you in this place, such as sea lions playing together, or live falconry in its purest state.
Without question that Cabárceno is a place with a very deep connection to its nature, and for this reason we also recommend you check the viewpoint of the Mirador de Rubí, inside of the natural park, and where you will be able to take into the views of the characteristic karst landscape of this area. Its panoramic views go as far as the Bahía de Santander,at the other side of the of the mountains, right behind the rocky summits which are the result of the mining activity of this area.
And, without leaving the park just yet, the lake of Lago de Cabárceno is also hiding in this park, one of the most popular visits within the natural park.
But here you will even find some places with historical remains, part of the heritage, of this area, such as the Iglesia de San Vicente Mártir, built in the 17th century.
If you would like to know what kind of climate you will encounter once you arrive to Cabárceno, it is of the oceanic kind. Nevertheless, and even though most people would think otherwise, precipitations are not so abundant in this area, although it is true that the climate here is humid. The highest peak of rainfall recorded in this area are during the winter and spring months, whereas summer months are very mild and temperate, around the 20ºC, making it a perfect destination for those who prefer not so hot summers.
But, as you might know, you don't know a place truly until you try its gastronomy. This is a place where natural products grow in abundance, and are also reflected in their local recipes, where seafood and river fish predominate.
But you won't be missing meat either, nor cheese, since both of them here are of great quality and reputation, as well as much flavour, as well as the cream cheese.
And to put an appropriate end to such a flavourful meal, the local 'postres pasiegos', will surely sweeten the memories you make in here.
There are many ways one can travel to Cabárceno, and from everywhere around Spain too.
You can do so by car, in which case we recommend you take the A8 motorway, that will take you as far as Santander, and from there follow the signs until you reach Cabárceno.
You can also come here by plane, via Santander's airport, and then connect from the city to Cabárceno by bus.
Other options for travelling to Cabárceno are by boat, or by train.
